Why a Primary Care Provider is So Important.

March 15, 2019

Internal Medicine physicians are considered Primary Care Providers (PCP) or Internists.  An Internist is a generalist, not a specialist, and is board certified in Internal Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine.  An Internist is dedicated to the primary care and specialty care of the adult patient. With seven years of medical training, Internists are qualified to manage complex illness in the critical care area, as well as general medical conditions. Establishing care with an Internist as your primary care provider affords you consistency and efficiency on a number of levels.

Familiarity

Knowing who you are is one thing, but knowing and understanding your medical history is another. Knowledge and familiarity help to personalize your care and save time that may have previously been spent explaining medical history, personal caveats and who you are. An Internist’s goal is to deliver the care that is right for you — not employ a one-size-fits-all approach. Tailored health care is easier when you have a meaningful relationship with your provider. Your Internist will help you navigate the health care system so you can concentrate on your health.

Prevention and condition management

If you see one doctor for your heart issues (cardiologist) and another for a rash on your skin (dermatologist), these two doctors might not know about each other. Can your heart issues or medication be associated with a new rash on your skin?  Without an Internist looking at “the big picture,” this connection may be overlooked.  Having an Internist as your primary care provider ensures that all major health-related conditions are addressed with you and your specialist.  Your Internist can help manage chronic conditions and help improve your quality of life.
