This program became a formal affiliate of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 2000 in order to provide St. Jude’s cutting edge research therapies for children with cancer and blood diseases.

Meet Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

About NICU:

Physicians specializing in neonatology - care of sick newborns - are joined by specially-trained nurses, dietitians, respiratory therapists, social workers and pediatric specialists who work as a team to provide the best care possible for our babies and their families. Located inside of the Niswonger's Children's Hospital, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) treats more than 400 babies a year. The NICU is a component of the only state-designated perinatal center within a 100-mile radius. Services provided include:

  • Air/ground transport

  • Pediatric subspecialties

  • 24-hour perinatology/neonatology availability

  • Genetic ultrasound/lab

  • Multi-disciplinary follow-up clinic

Des R. Bharti, MD

In addition to his Doctor of Medicine, Dr. Bharti has earned a Master in Business Administration and a Master of Public Health from ETSU in Johnson City, TN. His medical training includes resident of internal medicine; pediatric resident, Flushing Hospital Medical Center, New York, NY; neonatal fellowship, North Shore University Hospital, Cornell University Medical College, New York, NY.

Darshan Shah, MD

Dr. Shah gained a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia, Regional ECMO Center in Augusta, GA. His residency in Pediatrics was earned at the BJ Medical College, Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, India and New York Medical College, Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in New York, NY. His pre-medical education was completed at the Diwan Ballubhai Madhyamic School in Ahmedabad, India. His medical education was obtained at the Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College in Ahmedabad, India.

Shawn M. Hollinger, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Hollinger began his medical education at the Saba Univerisity of Netherlands Antilles. He received his medical degree in 2008. He completed his Pediatrics Residency at the Quillen College of Medicine in 2011. He completed his fellowship at the University of Ottawa in Ontario Canada in 2014. Where he was chosen as Chief Fellow for the 2012-2013 academic year.
