What is Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery (also known as laparoscopic surgery) is becoming the preferred treatment option for most gynecologic surgeries. MIGS uses state-of-the-art technology to minimize the damage to human tissue, reducing postoperative pain and blood loss, leading to a quicker recovery, and lessened scarring.

The advantages of minimally invasive surgery are:

  • Less pain after the procedure

  • Less blood loss

  • Ability to go home the same day after surgery, in most cases

  • Earlier return to daily activities

  • Smaller incisions

What are the different types of minimally invasive surgery?

  • DaVinci robotic surgery

  • Traditional or “straight stick” laparoscopy

  • Vaginal surgery

What is daVinci Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery is a form of minimally invasive surgery where the surgeon uses a computer controlled robot to assist him/her with the procedure.

The major advantages of robotic surgery include:

  • Enhanced dexterity

  • Enhanced visualization

  • Greater precision of the instruments

How is daVinci Robotic surgery performed?

The surgeon works from a console in the operating room, controlling robotic instruments mounted on robotic arms working through tiny incisions in the patient. The surgeon looks through a 3-D camera attached to another robotic arm. The surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements are transmitted through the console to the instruments attached to the robot’s arms. The mimicked movements have the same range of motion as the surgeon allowing maximum control. An experienced surgical team supervises the robot at the patient’s bedside.
