Osteoporosis is a disease in which the quantity of bone is reduced and the quality of bone is impaired. As a result, the bones become weaker and more likely to fracture.

About Osteoporisis:

Osteoporosis is common:

  • In women over the age of 50, there are more osteoporotic fractures than heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and cervical cancer combined.

  • 1:2 women over 50 are expected to break a bone because of osteoporosis.

  • 1:4 men over 50 are expected to break a bone because of osteoporosis.

Hamdy, Ronald C., MD, FRCP, FACP

Ronald C. Hamdy, MD, FRCP, FACP is a professor of Internal Medicine, holder of the Cecile Cox Quillen Chair of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine and Director of the Osteoporosis Center at East Tennessee State University. He did his postgraduate training at the University of London, England and in 1977 was appointed Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Geriatric Medicine at the University of London, England. In 1985, he was recruited by East Tennessee State University. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Southern Medical Journal from 2000 to 2010. He is actively involved in research and practices in Johnson City. He has published four medical books, over 150 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and numerous chapters in medical textbooks. His basic science research is on reducing the impact of cellular ischemia. His main clinical interests are metabolic bone diseases and dementia. Dr. Hamdy can be contacted at: hamdy@etsu.edu
